How We Work

WMC Governance Structures

All 33 local authorities are represented by their leaders on the WMC Full Council which meets every six months as a decision making body.

The Full Council is advised by a Member Steering Group which consists of Leader representatives from our six sub regions: Birmingham; Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire; The Black Country; Worcestershire; Herefordshire,  Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin; and Staffordshire and Stoke, plus a representative from each of the three main political parties. The Steering Group meets bi-monthly.

The Chief Executives' Task Force is WMC’s senior officer group and is responsible for advising the Full Council and the Member Steering Group on matters of strategic importance. The Task Force also supports the WMC Host Chief Executive on significant operational matters which require a wider sounding or where technical advice/support is needed from local authorities.

Political Groups

We are committed to involving the main political groups in the West Midlands with our work.  The formal mechanism to achieve this is the Member Steering Group. Representatives of the three main political groups also meet prior to Full Council meetings.  The contact for each group is as follows:

Conservative - Cllr Roger Hollingworth, Bromsgrove District Council r.hollingworth@bromsgrove.gov.uk
Labour - Cllr Steve Eling, Sandwell MBC  steve_eling@sandwell.gov.uk
Liberal Democrat - Cllr Paul Tilsley, Birmingham City Council paul.tilsley@birmingham.gov.uk

Member Appointments to Outside Bodies

WMC is often asked to appoint representatives of the local government sector to outside bodies. When such requests are made the Member Steering Group considers these and where necessary undertakes its nominations process in order to identify a suitably skilled and experienced elected member to represent WMC. We currently have four elected members representing WMC on various bodies. Please click here for further details.
