Profiling the West Midlands

WMES Brussels provides information and intelligence on a wide range of EU policy, legislation and funding, ensuring that the region’s voice is heard and that partners can make the most of opportunities and understand the impacts. Information is provided in publications, via targeted briefings and fact sheets and through face to face meetings.

Understanding EU policy and its impact is vital for all regions so that organisations can react accordingly to current and future strategies.

  • It is estimated that up to 70% of EU legislation can be eventually implemented by regions and local authorities;
  • EU policy provides the framework for current and future EU funding opportunities;
  • EU policy development is influenced by the exchange of best practice and peer review between Member States and regions across Europe;
  • The regional dimension is now increasingly important at both the national and EU level e.g. ‘triple-helix’ models that link research, business and regional governance;
  • EU policy can be influenced by regions and local authorities, organisations and businesses especially when they are able to use the strengths of EU-wide networks to promote positions.
