What is Coaching All About?
Practice-based research has demonstrated the important contribution coaching can make to employee development and organisational performance. It can help people to address under-performance, clarify goals, enhance their problem solving ability and support them in their role.
Sandwell Council is part of the regional Coaching Pool organised by West Midlands Councils. This means that 26 of our employees this year have the opportunity to access free coaching, choosing from a range of qualified professionals. All coaches from the Pool are highly qualified and have specialist public sector experience.

Is coaching an option for me? As we only have a limited number of places we need to make sure that the right people and their situations benefit from coaching. If you fall into one of the following categories you will be given priority access to coaching from the Coaching Pool:

  • Managers who have been given more responsibility/changed roles as a result of restructures
  • Managers involved and leading staff through transformation and change programmes
  • Managers undertaking service reviews
  • Managers looking to improve change management, communication style, relationships with colleagues and building staff morale
  • Managers who are looking to improve their performance

Beyond the priorities, any genuine request for coaching that has potential to improve your performance and benefit the organisation will be considered.

What next? If you are interested in being coached and you fall into one of the above categories contact Jacquie Beckford (Sandwell’s Representative) on 0121-569-3300. You will be required to complete a short request/application form, supported by your line manager. The request will need to state briefly how you fall into one or more of the above categories, how you will benefit from coaching and your key objectives. The form should be sent to Jacquie Beckford for the next stage of the selection process.
Alternatively, if you would like an informal conversation about whether coaching is right for you, before filling in any paperwork, Jacquie will be able to help (0121-569-3300).

How will I know my request has been successful? If you apply for coaching, a Panel will evaluate your request and advise you on the best route to access the support you are seeking. This may be coaching from the Coaching Pool, or it could be access to one of Sandwell’s own internal coaches (trained to the same level as the Coaching Pool coaches) or a suitable mentor/work shadow from across the organisation.
